Questions We're often asked about Chocolate Truffles
Chocolate truffles have a long and rich history, with different countries having their own preference. Firetree’s truffles reflect the style most popular in Britain, with a decadent and creamy chocolate ganache centre enveloped in a coating of chocolate and dusted or coated with ingredients such as cocoa powder or nuts. We directly-source our cocoa beans from volcanic islands including the Solomon Islands and Madagascar to create a chocolate shell that’s layered and complex in flavour.
To make our truffles, we create a rich filling like salted caramel or Marc de Champagne ganache. The filling is piped into a crisp chocolate shell and then the whole is coated in yet more chocolate for a layered taste and texture experience.
Perhaps surprisingly, chocolate truffles gain their name from their resemblance to the prized truffle fungus with its dark, textured skin and spherical shape. And much like their namesake, our chocolate truffles are a luxurious delicacy often savoured during special occasions, as a gift or as a sweet side to an after dinner coffee.
Firetree Chocolate's premium chocolate truffles are distinguished by several unique factors.
Cocoa Sourced from Remote Volcanic Islands: Firetree Chocolate sources its cocoa beans from islands across the South Pacific and Indian Ocean – islands that are rich in volcanic soil. This nutrient-rich soil imparts distinct flavours and aromas to the cocoa, creating a unique and complex taste profile that forms the crisp shell of our truffles.
Chocolate Expertise: Firetree Chocolate truffles are made by chocolate makers with a long tradition in the craft. Attention to detail in every step, from sourcing the best cocoa to creating the perfect filling requires skill and expertise to ensure superior texture and taste.
Unfortunately, no. Our truffles are suitable for vegetarians but not for vegans. Whilst dark chocolate is naturally suitable for vegans, to ensure authentic and delicious truffle fillings we use dairy ingredients such as cream and butter.
It's also important to note that Firetree’s products are made on equipment that also processes dairy and nuts. Therefore, those with severe allergies should exercise caution and check the ingredient and nutritional values provided for each product before purchase.
Firetree's chocolate truffles are a versatile option for any special occasion.
Birthdays: Our Chocolate Truffle Gift Boxes serve as a sophisticated and indulgent birthday present especially when presented in Firetree's exquisite packaging. With a variety of flavours to choose from they make a treat for anyone marking their special day.
Anniversaries: For an occasion like an anniversary, Firetree Chocolate Truffles provide a delectable way to show love and gratitude. Our premium quality and unique tastes ensure they stand out as a gift for your loved one.
Dinner Parties: Should you happen to be hosting or invited to a dinner party or get together then our Luxury Chocolate Truffles make the perfect accompaniment to a glass of Champagne or the after dinner coffee cafetiere.
We start by spinning a hollow chocolate ball ready for the truffle filling.
Chocolate is deposited into each half of a spherical mould and then 'spun' so that centrifugal force pushes the chocolate to the inside surface whilst it also cools to form the shell.
We seal the two halves together to form a complete ball, leaving a small opening for the truffle centre.
A deliciously decadent and creamy filling such as salted caramel or Marc de Champagne ganache is the next step as it's piped into the middle of the truffle.
Finally, we enrobe the shell in more chocolate and then dust it with a little cocoa powder or icing sugar.
Chocolate truffles are so-called thanks to their resemblance to the highly-prized truffle fungus that has a dark brown, textured exterior and a soft, creamy flesh inside.
Various people lay claim to the invention of the chocolate truffle and different countries favour their own style, recipes and methods for making this popular confection.
Firetree's truffles, made in the UK, resemble the style preferred in Belgium with a dark or milk chocolate shell filled with chocolate ganache, buttercream, or nut pastes.
Marc de Champagne is a brandy that is distilled from the grapes after they have been squeezed for wine-making. We know this brandy as 'Marc', a French word that is thought to refer to the press used to squeeze the grapes. In Italy, 'marc' is known as 'grappa', a name that will be familiar to many.
Like any distilled spirit or brandy, Marc de Champagne has a more intense flavour than its lighter Champagne counterpart making it ideal for the rich, creamy ganache centre in our truffles.
If you're a lover of chocolate and confectionery, you won't have missed the rise in popularity of salted caramel since its invention in the 1970s. French pastry chef Henri Le Roux first created salted caramel by using salted butter and the result was named the 'best confectionery in France'.
As the twenty-first century began, high-end chefs started to incorporate salted caramel into a range of recipes from desserts to cocktails.
For Firetree's Truffles, the rich, molten salted caramel centre marries perfectly with the soft lemon, white grape and lush cherry taste notes of our Malekula Island single-estate chocolate.
The best before date for our luxury chocolate truffles depends very much on the ingredients used and how they are stored. Before they are opened, they will stay in good condition for many months and once opened they will remain fresh for 2 to 4 weeks if stored correctly.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Proper storage plays a role in preserving the quality of chocolate truffles. It is recommended to store them in a place away from direct sunlight and strong odours. The optimal storage temperature ranges between 15-21°C (60-70°F). If refrigerating the chocolate truffles ensure they are placed in an airtight container to prevent moisture and unwanted odours from seeping in.
Chocolate truffles in the UK can be frozen. When frozen correctly they can last for up to 6 months. To freeze them, place the chocolate truffles in an airtight container with parchment paper separating each layer. Prior to consumption, allow them to thaw gradually in the refrigerator overnight or during the day.
