Questions We're often asked about Kosher Chocolate
Kosher chocolate refers to chocolate that follows a set of dietary principles known as kashrut.
For premium chocolate to be kosher certified, all ingredients must be in accordance with these laws. This requires only using ingredients that have been approved as Kosher.
Furthermore, the manufacturing process for chocolate must meet kosher standards. Equipment utilised in the production of chocolate can only be used to manufacture Kosher chocolate if the equipment is considered Kosher itself. Any non-Kosher equipment has to follow a strict, specified cleaning process to be able to make Kosher chocolate.
The Firetree facility is certified by KLBD to supply Kosher chocolate.
Under the dietary laws of Kashrut, there are some ingredients or foods that are prohibited. There are some that can be Kosher or non-Kosher, depending on the process to produce them.
Some “regular” chocolate can be Kosher, by default, due to the ingredients used, but not called Kosher chocolate by the chocolate maker.
At Firetree, our Kosher chocolate is our regular chocolate. Obtaining Kosher certification doesn’t change the nature of our chocolate, it merely ensures that it is made from kosher ingredients and adheres to kosher processes.
It’s important to check the information for each product as not all in the Firetree range are currently Kosher certified. Our truffles, oat milk and cappuccino chocolates are not kosher certified due to the use of non-kosher ingredients.
Firetree provides a variety of chocolate options, including both dairy and dairy-free selections that are kosher-certified.
For milk to be considered Kosher, it must meet specific requirements. The milk used in Firetree chocolate meets those requirements and is certified for use in Kosher products.
We currently have two kosher-certified dairy milk variants: our 40% Cocoa Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal Milk Chocolate and the 50% Cocoa Philippines, Mindanao Island Dark Milk Chocolate. These come in a selection of bars, Thins and hot chocolate form.
Our dairy-free dark chocolate varieties are made from single origin cocoa beans, from remote volcanic islands such as the Solomons and Vanuatu. As our dark chocolate is naturally free from dairy, it’s also the perfect choice for vegans and those following plant-based diets.
Our Kosher certified chocolate is certified by KLBD (Kashrut Division London Beth Din) so you can be sure that all the ingredients going into the kosher certified chocolate and all the equipment used to manufacture it have been through a rigorous process to ensure they meet the dietary requirements of Kashrut.
The certification process includes record keeping and oversight by certifying bodies to provide trust for consumers.
Kosher and allergens are completely separate things. Just because a product is certified as Kosher, it does not mean that it is allergen free.
Information on any allergens can be found on the product packaging or on our website.
Yes, special events and ceremonies can feature kosher chocolate as a delightful addition. Kosher dark chocolate adheres to the laws of kashrut ensuring it aligns with the requirements for consumption during festivities without any breaches of dietary regulations.
Chocolate plays a role in Jewish holidays and observances such as Hanukkah, where chocolate coins (gelt) are a customary delicacy. Choosing premium certified chocolate guarantees that these treats are fitting for the occasion.
At Firetree, we carefully select our cocoa from single farms and estates located on exotic islands with rich volcanic soil and lush forest surroundings, creating an ideal setting for cocoa cultivation.
Through collaboration with our cocoa farmers to oversee the harvesting, fermentation and solar drying of the beans, we ensure that the inherent natural flavours and taste notes are fully preserved.
Upon reaching our UK facility, the cocoa beans undergo whole-bean roasting at just the right temperature to retain and enhance their natural flavours before they undergo conching, tempering and moulding processes.
All ingredients are carefully selected to meet the Kosher certification requirements of KLBD. All of our equipment and processes also meet certification standards. This ensures that you can be safe in the knowledge that our Kosher certified chocolate meets all the require dietary laws of Kashrut.
