Questions We're often asked about Halal Chocolate
Halal is an Arabic word that means lawful or permitted. To obtain Halal certification, we must adhere to the guidelines of a Halal certification organisation.
We are required to ensure that all components used in our Halal chocolate do not contain any prohibited, or Haram, ingredients.
The manufacturing process should also prevent any contamination with any non-Halal substances. This involves ensuring that the equipment used in producing the chocolate hasn't come into contact with prohibited items. If it does, a strict cleaning process following Halal guidelines is undertaken.
Halal certified chocolate ensures that all its components are permitted or lawful according to Islamic law. Halal does not require that all ingredients are solely natural.
All ingredients used to make our chocolate have been through an approval process to ensure they are Halal.
Halal chocolate being certified doesn't automatically make it healthier, than non-halal chocolate. The healthiness of chocolate is more about what's in it and how nutritious it is, rather than just following Islamic dietary laws.
Both halal and non halal chocolates can have healthy ingredients. Healthier chocolate choices usually contain cocoa and less sugar, artificial additives and unhealthy fats. Firetree stands out as one of the Halal chocolate brands in the UK.
While Halal certification ensures that the ingredients align, with law it doesn't necessarily mean the chocolate is healthier overall.
Halal certification doesn't change how our chocolate tastes. The taste profile of our chocolate mostly depends on factors like the quality of the cocoa beans, how the beans are roasted and conched.
At Firetree, we work directly with our cocoa farmers to ensure that the highest standards of growing, harvesting, fermenting and solar drying of our beans are upheld. Then, when these high-quality beans arrive with us at our Cambridgeshire base, we blend them with just the right amount of unrefined sugar and a few other ingredients to ensure you get some of the best tasting halal chocolate in the world.
Yes, it is possible for premium chocolate that is halal-certified to be vegan. Halal and vegan have the following criteria:
Vegan: A vegan product does not contain any animal derived ingredients or by-products. This includes, for example, the absence of dairy, eggs, honey or other substances derived from animals. The manufacturing process also does not use any material derived from animals.
Halal Certification: This ensures that all components and processes adhere to Halal dietary regulations and are approved by an established Halal certification organisation. Some animal products and animal derived products are forbidden (Haram), but not all. Some animal or animal derived products such as dairy, eggs or honey can be Halal.
With the exception of our truffles and dairy milk chocolates, all other Firetree products adhere to both halal and vegan guidelines. All products that are halal-certified are highlighted in the main description of the product.
Check the packaging for a halal certification statement. Sometimes, you’ll fine a logo from an established halal certification organisation indicating that the chocolate product is halal certified or, if not a logo, then the certifying body may be referenced.
We highlight our halal-certified products under the product description on our website. Firetree Chocolate is certified by Halal Certification Europe to produce chocolate.
