Oats do not naturally contain gluten. They contain similar proteins called avenin and avenalin. Gluten is only found in oat products where the oats have come into contact with, and have been inadvertently contaminated by wheat in the growing field, in storage, and the milling process.
The oats we use at Firetree to make our unique and creamy oat milk chocolate come from a segregated source to ensure no cross-contamination occurs, and where the supplier specifies that the oats contain less than 20mg/kg (20 parts per million) of gluten.
EU and UK law requires that, for a products to be claimed as gluten free it should contain less than 20mg/kg to be “gluten free” and we undertake our own periodic testing of the oats and the chocolate to ensure that gluten is not present.
